So I'm new to these forums and have to say that so far the read has been worth it. So I have the "orphan" 1984 Aero 50 that most likely only now has 120 miles on it! 35 of those miles I have just put on in the last few weeks working out bugs and sorting out carb adjustments, etc. I now have a fresh battery but for the first week or so I was kick starting it with no battery and going on my way...like that it doesn't need a battery or if it dies you are not stranded!
So here are some items of note with this bike that make me think it really only has the hundred original miles...Dunlop tires and tubes that have full tread but big cracks on the sidewall. Very clean drum brakes, most plastics are a real bright blue, original seat is in very good condition, but the bad is rusty rims, fork, front rack and gas tank( first thing I replaced)
So I like the bike...it's a little small for my 5'10" frame but not quite looking like a circus act. I'm not happy with the top speed which on the flat is about 32ish with about 30psi tire pressure....I pumped them up real hard and it went faster but thought I'd blow out with the nasty looking sidewalks that have 3" cracks.
So, now I did the obvious things to make it safe...new IRC tires and tubes, air filter(old one was dust), new bushings on front fork, also in pieces. Just removed old tires and tubes, dropping rims off for powder coating, etc. So all of the parts ran me $100 and another $100 for powder coating and installing new tires/tubes...I just don't trust that I will do a perfect job, the old tires I got off but the sidewalks may have been distorted a bit in the process.
But back to my big problem, I live in NJ and need to be able to keep up with traffic. Even on the roads near my house that are 25mph I don't have the needed juice...basically I'm staying off the 35 mph roads all together. So I need to hop this bitch up....that is where this forum has been invaluable! Actually, if I had read about this model before ordering new tires I may have not done it and just passed the bike on. This is where the whole Orphan thing comes in and I complain about no kits or much in performance mods.....pls call the whambulance NOW.
So I pulled the trigger last night to the tune of just over $300 bucks for a Keli variator with 9 gram rollers, Pollini sport drive belt, Polini 1k clutch springs (not sure if i should have gone to 2k) and a Leovince SP3 exhaust model #4447. I gave that number because it took a while to figure what would/ could work on this odd ball bike. Even Leovince had trouble figuring this and I'm expecting that its NOT just going to bolt on but rather fashion something to make it fit. If anyone has installed this exhaust on the old Aero 50 let me know what I'm in for. I also get included with the exhaust 6.2 gram rollers so I could use some advise on which roller weight I should try first. I weigh 190 lbs and my roads are flat with hills that are not too steep. I have read about using different weights at the same time and would also consider it...I'm just want to get it right the first time since I'm not going to be taking it apart anytime soon.
I should have it all together in less than 2 weeks and my goal is to have a bike that can go close to 45 mph on flat ground. Other stuff in mind if this does not work would be a windshield, or Aero 80 intake, reeds, and bigger carb. Again, this forum is great and I learned from what others have done. I will update with how this all works out.
