While I look for some additional parts to get my scooter running well with the original parts I decided to go ahead and install the 24mm aftermarket Mikuni carb. I see others installing different carbs but they all seem to need adapters. Thankfully the 24mm Mikuni I got off eBay bolts up in the stock location! Two modification I had to made was:
1. Shorten the throttle cable by ~1/4" (done by removing the metal cap and very very very very carefully cut through the throttle cable's metal sheath and reinstalling the metal cap).
2. Remove the float bowl drain spout (done with a Dremal)
When I installed the carb I made a note of the jet sizes and adjusted the needle to its richest setting (it came pre-set and one level leaner than the richest level). Now I need to tune it. It starts and idles well (still need to fine tune all that) but when I get on the throttle quickly it will bog and stall. From what I know it leaves me to believe that it is too rich and stalling because of that.
My question is how can I be sure it is running rich and not running lean? I only road it up the street and back because IW as too afraid of killing the engine. I do not have an exhaust analyzer so my assumption is that I can only go off of the spark plug to determine combustion conditions. What is the best procedure to accomplish this?
When I did a brief search online I was only able to come up with specific tuning procedures for specific bikes so I wanted to ask the Aero Gods here first. Also as a precaution I tightened the oil pump cable a little bit in hopes I getting a little more oil per stroke.
