just recently bought a 1984 honda areo 80 just like the one i had over 20 years ago lol. its in real good shape. smoked lots. previous owner thought maybe it had the wrong oil in it. i flushed out tank and lines and put new honda oil in it. did same with gas. then cleaned carb very well. it now runs real good at idle but bogs out when bringin the rpms up going down the road. thought maybe it was fuel related . i unhooked fuel supply line while running to see if auto fuel valve was working and it was. lot of gas spewed out. spark plug is light brown and good. i am currently thinking it may have some baffles plugged in the muffler. took off muffler to see. went down the road without muffler. seem not to bog out but only gets up to maybe 30mpg. thinkin this is due to no back pressure. so i have bought drano and oven cleaner to try and chemically clean inside of muffler. hope this is the fix i am looking for. looking to spend alot of ride time on this back and forth to work 60 miles round trip each day to save on fuel cost. any ideas or experiance like this someone would like to help me out with? if the muffler does not fix the problem maybe i will look into electrical. dont think its that though. runs super at idle and half throttle ish. thanks any help would be appreciated.

The muffler is not the issue here. FYI, running without the muffler will lean the motor out and melt the piston. It also changes the whole tuning of the engine. These scooter are jetted too lean from the factory. You need to up size the main jet from the stock 88 to a 90. This will cure the the stumble at least. It will allow you to go to full throttle without the scooter falling on its face. At least this cured mine of this issue. I'm gonna try a 92 this spring.
The Honda part number for the 90 jet is 99102-GHB-0900, the 92 jet is 99102-GHB-0920
I am planning on a number of performance upgrades on the Aero 80 this year. Mainly because my wife wants to use this scooter to commute with and the road from our house to town has a 45 mph speed limit and on the steeper hills she slows to 35 mph and does not like that.

Did you get a chance to try the 92 jet yet?

I tried a 90, 92 and a 95 and it just got worse after the 90. I did not bother with trying the 98.
Did you adjust the idle mixture and idle speed adjustments following the procedures in the service manual? Not just set the initial number of turns in the box at the front of the chapter.

No, I didn't I will have to do that.. the adjustment has like a flange on it it will only turn 3/4 rotation. I think it already had the 90 jet in it, I feel no difference at all. they look identical but I'm sure to the naked eye you you cant tell the difference. when I first got it running it hit 48mph now that I have factory filter and airbox I can only get 43mph oh well I dont want to fry my piston

The jet size is stamped into the side of the jet. If you are like me, you will need a magnifying glass to see the numbers. I break or grind off the tab on the carb body so the damn thing has real adjustment and not EPA required adjustment.

ok thanks, I didnt know it was stamped on there, I wil have to get a something to look at it up close. my 90 jet came in a kit (not Honda) but that shouldnt make a difference...

The 90 jet in the Keyster kit is a Keihin jet for your Keihin PB series carb, just like Honda jets are. Honda does not make jets or carbs.

My old jet was a 88, thanks for the clue. I still cant get it mixed properly I grinded off the tab on the air / fuel screw with my dremmel turn the screw to the intial setting 1.5 out, then switched & adjusted the idle screw down alittle, then went back and turned the mix screw out listend for the idle to go up. then readjusted the idle down. It's definitly not right. Question.... about the air/fuel screw clockwise richer or leaner?

Turning the screw in (clockwise) makes the mixture richer and out (counterclockwise) makes it leaner. The screw adjusts the air volume not the fuel volume. Your engine is an individual and may need a different adjustment than another Aero 80. Run the mixture screw IN and/or OUT until you find the highest RPM at which the engine will idle. Then adjust the idle speed screw until the rear wheel just does not turn if you do not have a tach.

okay quick question, when adjusting the carb with the air fuel mix screw there is about 1.25 turns of play where the idle is at it's highest. my question is: should I have it closer to the in position or the out (counterclockwise)
I've got the 80 tuned perfect! now just workin on the 125

Better to be rich than lean so in as far as possible while maintaining the max RPM. Sorry for being slow to answer but the wife and I escaped to the beach for a couple of days.

We did enjoy ourselves. 3 days and 2 nights with traveling on the first and last day. So-so weather the first day and rained like hell coming home. But the middle day was perfect. Sunshine and next to no wind. Ran up and down the coast visiting out favorite places.
