Well, did an assessment of the 125 yesterday afternoon and not to bad considering it has been stored since 2000. Both front and rear brake cables a frozen, will order those tomorrow. Fuel and oil systems need draining, flushing and new hoses. Carb, of course needs a through cleaning and a new air filter. The motor cranks over OK but the petcock is either bad or the hose has a hole in it, you can't draw a vacuum on it, so there is no fuel flow, will address that tomorrow. Tires are OK, but the seat is trashed and has a plastic bag on it. Will order a new seat cover for it. All in all, not bad for $125.

So I ordered the brake cables and a petcock as this one won't pull a vacuum. Picked up new fuel, oil and vacuum lines. Ordered the missing spoiler, some body retaining grommets, a new spring for the center stand as this one is weak. Also ordered an air filter element as the one on the scoot is a bit tore up. Will drain the fuel system tomorrow along with the oil system. Replace all the hoses after flushing both systems. Gonna put the carb, tear it down and put it in to soak. By the time the parts arrive next week everything else should be ready to go.

So yesterday at a quarter to 5 the dealer calls to tell me both brake cables are NLA (No Longer Available). So now the search starts to find cables that will work. I'm considering just installing a brake lever on the handle bar and doing away with the foot pedal all together. The lever off my Aero 80 will fit the handlebar and a rough measurement says the cable will fit. The front one off the 80 may fit but I got tired and quit for the day.

The project has come to a screeching halt. First the brake cable problem the the Aero 80's electric starter takes a dump. The wife complains and I tell her use the kick starter. She responds with something about my ancestry. I call her a wuss and she threatens to kill me if I don't change the damn starter. Well I do have two spares so the engine is out of the scoot but family shows up for a visit and then I have foot surgery on Tuesday and I won't be home tomorrow, so everything is held up. Guess she can ride the Spree since it works like always.

My karma is on a major high this week. First the surgery on my foot was not as bad as first thought and I am walking on it already (surgery was yesterday). Plus the doc that did the surgery say he can make the porokeratosis on the bottom of my foot quit hurting after dealing with it for 10 years, I am jubilant. Then while looking for a carb for another Aero 125 owner I find what I've been looking for, the instrument package with the tach in it for my Aero 125 for less than $25 plus shipping (around $12.50). Turns out this is my week because I just found a 1985 Aero 50 to buy locally and reasonably priced too.

My speedo/tach instrument cluster arrived. Pretty nice and the speedo reads in MPH and Kilos. There is also a resettable trip odometer, which seems to be another feature we Americans did not get. Very cool.

So now that the 80 is running again, I will turn my attention to the 125. So Tuesday (Monday is a day at the private shooting range with 5 other avid shooters) I will pull the carb, drain the tank and replace the non-working petcock and swap in the instrument cluster with the tachometer.

I just ordered the last parts I need to get the 125 road able. I have opted to do away with the rear foot brake pedal and add a left handle bar brake lever for the rear brake. I have the cable and the handle bar switch assembly and brake lever on hand. The carb is soaking (I'm gonna stay stock to start with), new air filter is on hand and I found both rear turn signals I stole for the Aero 80 new, even though they are NLA (No Longer Available). They will be here next week. I have a new front brake cable to replace the frozen one. I find I will be having to modify the bezel for the instrument package as the European speedo/tach cluster in a slightly different shape. Oh, and I have to make a hole for the trip odometer rest button. While I was being lucky an NLA parts I asked about the NLA headlight cover I am missing for the Aero 80. My karma is still good as the parts guy the parts guy found one of those too. So I'm golden for the Aero 80 too.

Fuel tank drained, flushed, new filter (in tank and in-line), petcock, fuel lines, vacuum line, reinstalled carb with spacer the right way. Removed the front brake cable, need to cut off the old cable from the hand brake lever as the cable is frozen. Removed the rear brake cable and installed a long cable to use a left hand hand brake instead of the foot brake. Removed the instrument cluster and reworked the bezel to fit the tach cluster. Will have to do a little rewiring when I install it but it is only 3 wires. I also pulled the plug and poured a cap full of 2 stroke oil in the cylinder. I still need a battery and a seat or a seat cover.

First in Fridays mail were the two front spoilers for the Aero 125 I ordered from Thailand. These are NOS (New Old Stock) in the original package with part numbers and "Made in Japan" on the label in the packing. That afternoon my dealer called and said my NOS parts were in. Bother left and right rear turn signals arrived for the 125. Along with the turn signals were a throttle cable for a 125 so I can run the spare 125 carb with the longer slide on the Aero 80. Also the Aero 80 NOS right hand headlight cover/reflector came in too. So my Aero 80 is fully covered with plastic and body covers now.
I ordered a good used seat for the Aero 125, suppose to arrive by Wednesday. So once I solve the rear brake cable issue (with the present routing the aero 80 cable is about 1 1/2" short, which just happens to be the difference in wheel base between the two scooters) I will be running down the road.

Got the rear brake converted over to the handle bar today. I used the Aero 80 brake handle, lefthand switch assembly and cable. It took a little clever cable routing but the cable reaches both ends just fine. The foot brake is history. The rewiring is gonna be a breeze. I also determined that the tachometer instrument cluster will not fit (it hits the handle bars) without the European bezel. So for now the stock cluster goes in, at least until I acquire the other bezel. At least now I have a source for European parts.

Well, even thought the Aero 80 cable was a good idea and it worked for straight ahead and right turns, but it was just too short for left turns. Must have something to do with the 1 1/2" longer wheelbase of the 125. So ordered a custom made cable today. Picked up a battery and it is getting an overnight charge as I type. Will attempt to have the scooter running tomorrow, so all I will need to add to finish this scooter is the cable when it arrives.

It lives, well at least the engine runs and it moves down the street. There are issues however. Either the clutch is slipping real bad or the belt is bad or the variator isn't variating. Off the line is lousy at best, the Aero 80 is 5 times better. Top speed is the same as the Aero 80 or right around 40 mph. So tomorrow the left side cover comes off and I will see what is what. I do have a spare belt at least so hopefully that is it.
Oh and it smokes to high heaven because of the 25 to mix in the gas tank along with the oil pump, but hey for an engine that hasn't run in 10 years it is a safe way to go.

Well, I know why it is a dog off the line and why top speed sucks. The clutch is toast. the belt is shot and the rollers are flat. So instead of just one or even two things being bad, everything is bad. I ordered some aftermarket rollers and a high performance clutch and have a spare belt for now, but will be getting a new belt too if I can find one other than OEM.
